The Village of Columbus is happy to announce the hiring of Claudia Herrera, Health & Wellness Coordinator, funded through a Department of Health grant. Herrera’s role is to assess community health and wellness needs, identify gaps in care and coordinate with federal, state and local agencies to ensure Columbus receives access to all eligible services. Herrera brings 14 years of experience working with government and private agencies in New Mexico and Arizona.
Herrera is working out of the old school complex where she attended elementary school and her mother was a teacher. “I remember sitting here outside the window of her room, waiting for her class to end,” said Herrera while touring the community gardens. “I have so many memories here.”
The family moved to Phoenix when she was 16 years old and Herrera finished her schooling and started a career in Arizona. In 2008, she moved to Las Cruces but the village was never far from her heart. “Columbus has always been my home,” said Herrera.
In 2021, Herrera was finally able to return to her hometown with her husband and 3 children. “I’m happy to be able to give back to the community that saw me grow up,” said Herrera.
Contact Claudia Herrera by email here or stop by her office at the old school (aka The Health & Wellness Community Complex) on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9am to 12pm.
