UPDATE: Downtown Columbus Shooting

UPDATED 4/15/2021: According to KOTV, El Paso, U.S. Customs and Border Patrol apprehended suspect Jesus Jose Lopez as he attempted to re-enter the U.S. at the Columbus Port of Entry.

At approximately 1:05 pm on Friday, April 9, 2021 the Luna County Sheriff’s department received a call about a shooting in downtown Columbus near the southwest side of the intersection of Main and Broadway.

Village offices and the Columbus Village Library went on immediate lockdown.

Social media reports list both victim and shooter names though the Sheriff’s department will not confirm these due to the on-going nature of the investigation.

The shooter is still at large and officers are actively seeking and following up on leads regarding the circumstances leading to the shooting and to the shooter’s whereabouts.

The Sheriff’s department asks that people avoid active crime scene areas currently blocked by crime tape including Main and Broadway and North Boundary by the old school.
