On March 11th, after two weeks on the trail through the villages of northern Mexico, the horses ride into town, 107 years after they first arrived at the orders of General Pancho Villa. “Today, we ride in friendship in the only binational cavalry commemorating the casualties of the Raid – Mexican and American alike” said Norma Gomez, Event Organizer for the Columbus, NM Chamber of Commerce, “spurring economic development along its way.”

The Cabalgata began in 1999 with a fortuitous meeting. Early members from the Mexican side had been recreating the rides for years but had never crossed the border—they couldn’t. “Without a government invite, they were not allowed,” said Allen Rosenberg, one of the early team members who started the Cabalgata. “We ran into them in front of the museum. When they told us they needed an official invite, we asked if the mayor of Columbus would suffice. Then we just walked a few blocks over and asked.”

What followed was a whirlwind of preparation, planning and government visits on both sides of the border. “It all happened so fast!” said Gomez, who was also one of the original planners. “One minute it was just an idea and the next we were hosting a thousand visitors in town!”

Through the years the Cabalgata grew to 3,000+ visitors, state and federal attendees and, at times, up to 300 horses. When the Covid-19 pandemic halted organization of all public events, smaller groups of riders continued to make the journey here, uninterrupted by world events. “I believe that tradition is important, and though we have had our share of bumps in the road it was awesome to see the dedication and comradeship amongst the people and riders. We couldn’t see letting the pandemic stop it” said Coy Gutierrez from Midland, Texas, who has been riding for years.

The Fiesta de Amistad kicks off on Thursday, March 9, 2023 at 10am with a memorial and reading of names hosted by the Columbus Historical Society behind the Depot Museum.

Hollywood Comes to Early College High School: Game of Thrones Armourer to give students a peek at the film industry.

Press Release

Early College High School
Natalia Lee

Armourer, Natalia Lee, will lead a symposium for ECHS students on career possibilities in the film industry. As the Armourer for the award-winning HBO show Game of Thrones, she brings an insider’s perspective to working with Hollywood and Film Studios. Highlighting the presentation will be a staged fight scene using real film props and re-enactors from the Society for Creative Anachronism. Starting at 10:30am on Wed., Dec 14, the symposium will also provide opportunities for students to speak with film directors, Film School & Film Studio representatives, and more. All presentations will be at the WNMU- Deming Learning Center and hosted by Early College High School. This event is by invitation only and is not open to the public.

It’s so rare for Deming to have real access to legitimate Hollywood personnel” said Bryan Simpson, Principal of ECHS, “Our students will be so excited to experience the film industry magic and make connections for career exploration.”

“I immigrated to Australia from Poland when I was 6 years old and worked my way up from the bottom of the film industry,” said Lee. “I came to New Mexico because of the burgeoning film Industry. But I came to Deming because this community reminds me of where I came from. There is so much opportunity for these kids to build a strong economic base through film work.”

With the expansion of Netflix into the Albuquerque Studio and development of 828 Studio and the Creative Campus in Las Cruces, our students have a real chance of pursuing a film industry career and we want them to hear about it first-hand” said Bryan Simpson, Principal of ECHS.

Early College High School is a public high school focused on developing students who are traditionally underrepresented in post-secondary settings. Students engage in rigorous academic preparation and are able to take college classes for credit before graduating from high school. Internships and robust career exploration are mandatory and create an enthusiastic and motivated student body. This hands-on-Hollywood event is the first of several events aimed at career explorations and introducing students to the many career opportunities in our state.

Natalia Lee the “Woman Of Weapons” is known for her work on Game of Thrones as a Film Armourer. Having designed weapons for the show including the iconic Heartsbane Sword, she worked with Weapons Master Tommy Dunne throughout the series to help create some of Film and TV’s most memorable weapons. She was asked by the creators of the show Dan Weiss and David Benioff to guest star as tribal leader “Chella”, a grizzly character in the early seasons. Having an energetic approach to her profession, Natalia can be seen weapons training and stunt doubling also. Born in Poland and raised in Australia she began her career in Security and Police Armouries, applying her skills to major motion pictures locally and then internationally.

Iman Shervington received her BA from the University of Southern California in International Relations (2005) and her Masters of Fine Arts in Directing from Columbia University (2010) with a concentration in Directing and Screenwriting. Through IWES, Iman utilizes her script development, cinematography, directing, producing, and editing skills and has created over 50 short films and PSAs, a web-series, a feature-length documentary, two feature- length narrative films and an award-winning podcast. These films have been screened at numerous local, national, and international film festivals, and she presents regularly at conferences to showcase her work. Iman has further experience in graphic design, photography, curriculum development, focus group facilitation, positive youth development, participatory action research, and media literacy.

LUNA COUNTY HOLDS WATCH PARTY, SEPTEMBER 30 2022, TO KICK OFF DITIGAL INCLUSION WEEK

Deming New Mexico. Just imagine buying a box of cereal at today’s prices with packaging stating up to 32 ounces of wholesome goodness…or a package of hamburger that is labeled up to 1lb. What about when you stand at the gas pump? The cost is $4.29 for up to one gallon! Consumers would protest and walk away. Yet we have been trained to accept the “up to” promise for our Internet and smart phone connections for years. Look at advertising, posts in your Facebook feed or on an Internet Service Provider (ISP) web page and you will see promises of “speeds up to” something consistently.

NO MORE! Luna County and their area partners are working to make that promise a thing of the past and inviting area residents to come to the County Commissioner Chambers or the Columbus Village Library for a fun and engaging Broadband Summit watch party and help kick off an effort to bring fast, reliable, and affordable internet to their residents. The event happens September 30 from 9am to Noon. Refreshments and an old fashioned, hands-on mind mapping effort will capture Luna County resident sentiments about their Internet connections. People are also encouraged to share how being stuck at home during the pandemic with slow or no Internet impacted their lives.

Each location will also award a door prize of a new tablet to one person that comes to share their home Internet speed, or simply their street address that offers no service.

Residents are encouraged to take the speed and quality of their Internet connection at home and work by going to https://nmbbmapping.org/survey/. Bring a screen shot of the results or write them down to bring. Residents that do not have internet and cannot attend can also call 575-567-3791 and leave a message with just their street address. No personal information will be saved or used for any reason other than to qualify the County for grant funds.
